Jol Ghori or Water Clock Significance during Durga Puja
‘Jol Ghori” is a age old tradition still followed in a few Bonedi Bari Durga Puja. The last 24 minutes of Ashtami and first 24 minutes of Navami Tithi is the time of Sandhi Puja . And the exact time when Ashtami ends and Navami begins is ‘Sandhi Kshan’ — the holiest moment . In many households there were elaborate preparations to mark the exact time of sandhi kshan .
When sandhi puja begins , a brass bowl with a hole in the bottom is made to float on the water . The shape and the hole is made in such a way that the bowl sinks in 24 minutes from being floated , which is the exact time of Sandhi Puja.
It helped determine the exact time for Balidaan in days before advent of clocks . It is still in practice in a few select households.
